I always thought that figure/ground confusion was an artist's problem that would disappear when you took a photograph. Now I see that it ain't so. I keep looking at this trying to figure out why the confusion is so strong, particularly on the left-hand side. Maybe some of the tree is actually in front of the thistles? My brain REALLY wants to know, and makes my eyes keep working at the problem.
